The Tooling & Manufacturing Association has been helping member companies train their precision metalworking aprentices for over sixty years through the association's Related Theory Program.
Established as a member service in 1934,
TMA provides Apprentice Training Related Theory courses for:
- Tool and Die Makers
- Mold Makers
- Precision Machinists
- Precision Sheetmetal/Model Makers
The courses are held on three Chicago area campuses:
- Triton College in River Grove, IL
- College of Du Page in Glen Ellyn, IL
- Oakton Community College - at satellite campus
- Maine West High School in Des Plaines, IL
Key features of the program include:
- College credit granted on each campus
- Industry developed and maintained curriculum through very active Apprentice Training Committee
- All instructors are from industry with a minimum of 9 years trade related experience
- Average instructor longevity teaching for TMA is over 10 years
- Annual registration fees are lower than in-district community college fees
- Largest locally-based precision metalworking program in the USA with more than 500 apprentices from 250-300 companies enrolled annually.
- Students attend classes two nights per week, September through April, for three years.
- Average classroom contact time is 165 hours per year
- Formal annual graduation ceremonies
- TMA completion certificates issued upon satisfactory completion of course work
